In case you hadn't noticed, the airline blogosphere pays a lot of attention to frequent flyer matters. And recent changes have been fodder for a lot of words and pixels. Much of the focus is on matters of interest mainly to "road warriors" who spend a lot of time flying around and might belong to a handful of different lines' programs. You know who you are, and there isn't anything I can tell you that you don't already know. Instead, I'm addressing those of you who might take four or fewer airline round trips a year and want to get as much as you can for your money. And you're a big group.

When Mai Whelan beat out 455 competitors to win $4.56 million dollars on “Squid Game: The Challenge” – the reality competition series based on the award-winning Netflix K-drama … minus the deaths! – she had all kinds of options to go away to luxurious destinations. But she surprised fans with her choice. “I asked my husband, Jay, to pick a cabin where I can go for walks and spend time with the dogs,” she said. “We found a place in Seaman, Ohio, with 80 acres of land for the dogs to run free and for me to stroll with my husband. It was a perfect, serene setting … and I didn't have to socialize with anyone. I slept a lot for a week, took strolls, wrote and ate.”

The Appian Way, begun in 312 BC, was the engineering wonder of its day. It connected Rome with Capua (near Naples), ignoring natural contours and running in a straight line for much of the way. Eventually it stretched 430 miles to Brindisi – gateway to the East – where Roman ships sailed for Greece and Egypt.
